Do you ever wonder if your voice is safe online? Well, today, you can have every reason to frown, because? Machine learning of new AI singing voice generator is so improving, it is now possible to hack a real person’s voice and use it for just about anything and believe me, when I say that this frightens me to the core.
Now it’s not just simple voice modulators that we speak about. This is now a “voice cloning” that means one can make a digital voice replica from just a few seconds of the real voice. And it only takes its ‘AI voice singing’ to spew any lies that it wanted out in public. How crazy is that? This device is not a joke, and it brings more scared about what will happen when this technology will be available for bad use.
The Temptation of AI Voice
That is understandable to me why AI singing voice generator technologies are interesting. For designers, the idea of being able to make voice overs without having to call an actor seems like quite a major game change. It could save a lot of time and money. It also is rather simple to understand how it can actually be used for good reasons.
But, and this is where the ethical questions come, it is like, what if people begin using this stuff for evil? I mean, what if someone fakes your voice with the technology, and started using it for sharing fake news and what not? And as much as the thought is appealing we do end up having to come up with another set of problems all together and I do hate it.
Real People, Real Risks
But there is permission as well. There are learners who use genuine papers, while others make fake ones or receive them from other people. As for the question – what if I don’t wish my voice to be cloned? Well to be honest it’s not like you can just turn your back, or decide to stop eating bad food and hope everything will change for the better right? By that I mean, imagine that somebody steals your voice in order to speak something which you wouldn’t want to speak yourself? It’s a terrible idea. It does definitely prompt one into thinking about the amount to which we control our ‘internet selves’.
And I just cannot help but wonder about the potential for scam, for instance, a user making a fake voice in order to dupe your close ones. We can easily imagine how easy it may all go wrong or end up being a total failure.
So, what can we do about it? But in my view everybody should be more careful with the information which we post on social networking sites. We also missed an ethical talk on the use of AI speech imitation tools as demonstrated in the two stated cases. And I truly believe that it is high time that we begin expecting more openness from digital firms or, otherwise, we are just walking on a very slippery slope here.
It is a tough one, and it is one of the reasons why I am worried about in the future.
Speaking of the future… What was the aim of the AI to take voice lessons? It wanted to know what its true voice was!
